Understanding watch modding

Watch modding is the practice of selecting compatible components and assembling them into an individual watch with its own appearance, specification and purpose.

The word “mod” originally described the modification of an existing watch. Today, it also covers complete custom builds assembled from compatible components. Rather than being restricted to one factory configuration, a customer can choose the visual and functional details that matter to them.

At the centre of our builds is a movement produced by Time Module, often known as TMI. Time Module operates within the Seiko Group’s movement manufacturing network and supplies movements for use by independent watch brands and builders around the world.

Depending on the calibre, these movements may be manufactured in Japan or Malaysia. The movement provides the watch’s mechanical foundation; DHWATCHMODS then specifies and assembles the remaining components into an independent finished watch.

This distinction is important. We use respected movement architecture, but the case, crystal, dial, hands, bracelet and final assembly form a separate DHWATCHMODS custom product.

Built for one customer

Every watch is made to order

Our watches are not picked from a shelf, placed into a box and dispatched. Every order begins with an individual customer specification and is hand-built for that customer.

This made-to-order approach is central to DHWATCHMODS. Before assembly begins, the customer selects the details that determine how the watch will look, feel and fit. These choices include the bracelet specification, wrist sizing, case-back style and other available options.

Once the specification has been confirmed, the compatible components are brought together and the watch is handcrafted as an individual build. It then undergoes our assembly checks, alignment inspection, movement performance assessment and applicable pressure-testing procedure.

Although certain watches may share the same design starting point, the final specification belongs to the customer who ordered it. This is what separates a DHWATCHMODS build from a mass-produced watch: it is assembled individually, checked individually and made to be worn by an individual.

The right calibre depends on whether you value everyday simplicity, multiple time zones, chronograph timing or a view into the mechanics.

Cases, crystals and interchangeable components

A movement may power the watch, but the components surrounding it determine how the finished piece looks and feels on the wrist.

Approximately 95% of our cases use 904L stainless steel. Selected models use 316L stainless steel, and this is identified within the relevant product description. Both materials are established watch-case steels; the choice depends on the particular design and component specification.

Every DHWATCHMODS build includes a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. Sapphire offers excellent scratch resistance, while the coating helps reduce distracting reflections and improves dial visibility under changing light.

A magnifying cyclops can be selected for compatible date-window designs, but it is not compulsory. Some customers prefer its increased date visibility; others favour the cleaner profile of an unmagnified crystal.

Interchangeability is one of the strengths of the modding ecosystem. It allows a watch to be configured around wrist size, preferred materials, practical requirements and personal taste. It can also make future changes—such as fitting a different compatible bracelet—more straightforward.

Recognisable design, personal specification

Luxury-inspired without the luxury-watch anxiety

Many DHWATCHMODS designs take inspiration from the proportions, colour combinations and visual language associated with celebrated luxury watches. They are not presented as watches made, authorised or warranted by those luxury houses. They are independent custom builds offering familiar design cues in a more accessible format.

For some collectors, a watch worth tens of thousands of pounds is not a realistic purchase. For others, owning one is possible, but wearing it while travelling, commuting or going about daily life can bring unwanted concern.

A custom build provides another route: a distinctive mechanical watch with a considered specification, without carrying the same purchase cost or sense of risk. It also offers something a fixed factory model cannot—a combination selected by the customer.

Through our configurator, customers can coordinate the movement, case, dial, hands, crystal, bezel, case back and bracelet. The aim is not merely to imitate an expensive object. It is to create an individual watch that captures the character the wearer enjoys while fitting their own budget and lifestyle.

After assembly

Inspection, timekeeping and pressure testing

Component choice is only part of a successful build. Assembly and final inspection influence how the watch performs, looks and wears.

After assembly, our automatic watches are checked on a timegrapher to assess movement performance. We normally ensure that the movement is operating within the manufacturer’s stated specification. More detailed regulation can be requested for an additional charge when a customer wants a more closely adjusted result.

We also inspect visible alignment and carry out pressure-testing checks appropriate to the selected case specification.

DHWATCHMODS has spent more than two years turning customer ideas into wearable custom watches. In that time, we have supplied more than 2,000 watches to customers in the UK and internationally, with particularly strong interest across the United States and Europe.

Customers return because they are not limited to a single off-the-shelf specification. They can use our configurator, discuss a more unusual brief or ask for guidance when they are unsure which components belong together.

We do not provide a Seiko manufacturer’s warranty or represent our watches as Seiko factory products. We do, however, stand behind the quality of our own work. If a watch arrives with a manufacturing defect or is damaged during insured transit, we will assess the issue and provide an appropriate repair, replacement or refund.

If accidental customer damage occurs later, we can usually offer repair or servicing support at a subsidised cost. We can also supply compatible replacement parts or help customers change elements such as the bracelet, subject to availability and the specification of the original build.

How much does a custom watch cost?

Most DHWATCHMODS builds sit between approximately £235 and £260, depending on the selected movement, case, bracelet and other components. This places them within the accessible end of custom mechanical watchmaking.

The objective is not to reproduce the market value or status of a five-figure luxury watch. It is to offer an individual, enthusiast-led alternative: a dependable movement, carefully selected materials, customer choice and independent assembly at a price that can be worn and enjoyed more freely.

For customers who want something more involved, we also accept higher-specification and bespoke requests. Unusual materials, specialised components and more complex briefs can be discussed individually.
